What grows well with Crocus' in your garden?

Postby Carolyn1978 » Sun Jan 31, 2010 7:39 pm

Hi All,

I have pre-ordered some blue and white crocus bulbs from GE and have just realised they will not like the spot I had planned for them. For some reason I thought they liked shade but I now realise they will need a sunny spot. They are so short I dont know what to plant them with that wont smother them!

Where do you grow them in your garden and what companion plants if any do you use?

Any ideas appreciated!

How about tulips, as they come into flower at a different time of the season to crocus bulbs?

Thanks for the idea Hartley, Tulips do grow here well as we have cold winters but they must be lifted in summer so that they dont rot due to high rainfall - I think I might go with a groundcover that is very low like wooly thyme. Carolyn

Hello - i too am wondering what looks good with crocus. I had them this year in a strip in a rockery where there is not much soil and can't really have tall flowers, and they were perfect. but now i am looking at dying/yellow leaves. What would be a good spring flower to place there as well? Generally i am trying to stick with red/orange/pink colours in the garden. I have planted giant freesia in those colours in pockets elsewhere and they look great, but the leaves come through in winter and i would not see crocus. So need something that is coming through from Sept (as the crocus is dying off). If I was thinking i would have layered when planting the crocus. I live out of canberra at 750m, so cool but brutal outside of winter. I'd be interested in any ideas, cheers

My Lily of the valley have just come up in the last few weeks, they would go well with Crocus.
