What is this?

Postby jack » Sat Jan 04, 2014 8:32 am

We moved into this house 15 months ago, i found in the shed a large black pot. I put it outside and by end of last spring it had leaves and no flowers. But looking at the leaves i was certain it was a tulip. It did not flower last year and died back over winter. Spring this year it popped up and three weeks ago flower stalks came up, then today the first flowers opened up.

Do Hosta die back to the ground? these died back to the soil and popped back up in Spring. But they do look more like host than tulips that is for sure.

Yes Jack they do die back, some people dig them up to store them over winter.
Depends where you live, up here in sub tropical it is too hot for them, they prefer cooler areas.
They should do very well in Tasmania.
