Penstemons! Can't understand why they died

Postby helebelle » Thu Sep 05, 2013 9:53 pm

Would much appreciate some input as to why the 'Port Wine' penstemons I planted, which grew strong and healthy last spring and into summer but had a lack lustre blooming period, simply died off over a short period.

They were in a very sunny bed, well drained, in which everything else (salvia, aquilegia and herbs) did really well under a big lillypilly tree.

Would like to try again and plant more but think I need some advice. Big thanks from an Inner West Sydney garden lover.

I had a lovely light mauve one, with large flowers, which was doing well but needed moving. It came apart into several pieces with plenty of roots, but none of the pieces look to be alive now. It was moved in winter and I shortened the stems, not sure what else I should have done. I'll be watching this thread!
