Fern tree and poor soil drainage

Postby gprp » Tue May 03, 2011 10:11 pm

Dear Forumites ,

I've just planted two grown fern trees ( 2 and 2,5m height) . I am concerned that soil drainage is not so good ( clay) , as a result the roots will start to decay and the trees will die .

I've added sheep manure trying to improve the soil a few weeks ago , however as you can see on the picture the drainage hasn't been improved .

Can you please advise how to improve the soil and any additional action that might be required for fern trees ? In addition , I was unable to plant one of three deeply enough ( approx. 40 cm ) , as a result I've decided to use a few stones to allow a better compression and adaptation of the tree . Please your thoughts and advice if feasible .

Thanks in advance
