Garden soil or potting mix?

Postby jarnie » Tue Jan 17, 2017 3:34 pm

I am lucky to have naturally occurring sandstone in my backyard.

There is a place which is about 1.5 metres high and almost vertical.
There is a 'pocket' in the side which is about 500mm long, 150mm wide and 150mm deep and I would like to plant something in that pocket but nor sure if I should fill it with potting mix or garden soil (bagged from say Bunnings). I have read that potting mix will rot after a period of time requiring changing. The pocket is self draining so cannot fill with water.

Also tips for a suitable cascading plant especially a native would be appreciated.

Casuarina 'Cousin It' would probably suit the spot well.

Thanks Pam

I Googled it and found some pics and it looks good - very good name too.

Any suggestion for what 'medium' to fill the pocket with - bagged garden soil?

If you used straight potting mix it would probably dry out too quickly. You could make a mix with some soil, potting mix and maybe a little sharp sand.
