Hey guys
Does Manure, Dynamic lifter, and Blood & bone all do the same job?
or does plants need abit of everything to thrive?
I also use seasoil concentrate, not sure if im wasting my money or not.

Yes and no is the short answer. They have differing amounts of nutrients in them. None of them is really better than the others in all aspects. Manures are great soil conditioners which add lots of organic matter to the soil. B n B is a great slow release of nitrogen and Phosphorous but holds no potassium, (which manure does.)
Dynamic lifter is really easy to apply and is a bit more concentrated and balanced than the other two.
If i had to pick just one, i'd take manure. Just two i'd take manure and dynamic lifter. This is simply because B n B is getting so expensive.
Here's a website which shows the NPK ratios and gives a brief description of the various organic ferts. It's one of my fav's.

Thanks for that link Longy - looks like an interesting site, and it's already answered a couple of questions I had about my compost heap....

I use a big scoop of each in my potting mix along with water saver granules and the plants just love it :P

Hi Sarah,

I'll throw my vote in for canola seed meal instead of either blood and bone or dynamic lifter. Canola meal (and any other oil-seed meal, for that matter) is what's left after they press the oil from the seeds. Being produced from seeds, it has a lots of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK is about 6:4:1) as well as a vast array of trace elements. It's also cheap - $18 for 25kg where B&B is $25 for 25kg and Lifter is more than either. You can get it from agricultural supply outlets, but should also be at large animal food outlets since it is used as a feed supplement for livestock.

Manure is great for soil because it provides organic matter to feed worms and soil microbes., but it isn't a powerful fertiliser (NPK of sheep manure is about 2:1:1) and may not have essential trace elements. On the other hand, using organic fertilisers (such as those we're talking about) without organic matter is almost pointless since you really need worms and soil microbes to make the nutrients in organic fertiliser available.

HTH
Cheers,
Stuart.

Thanks for your help guys.
I bought 200 litre of manure and 50 kilo of dynamic lifter
The canola seeds sounds interesting, but i have not seen it being sold in my local nursery.
The dynamic lifter is fairy cheap if you buy bulked.
The 50 kilo was $35.

Sounds good SG. I get 35KG's of pelletised chook manure for about $13, so it's pretty cheap. Dynamic lifter is a Yates product i think (Yates now being an American company) so i don't buy it anymore.I buy one called 'agri pellets'.
I don't know if Canola meal is available up here but i'll check it out.
Bear in mind that these types of products may be from genetically modified crops. Does that make them questionable as a fertiliser source?

Sarah

Where did you buy your dynamic lifter by bulk?

Great discussion - thanks!

Price aside, what is the best (for best plant growth) fertiliser mix to put on a newly established vege garden? Manure has already been added.

Probably all of the above. I think it comes down to what's available. If all are available, i'd add all of them.
It will also depend on what you want to grow first. For example, potatoes, a great first crop in a new bed, love B n B and don't mind a soil with a lower Ph.
Legumes like peas and beans may not need so much but like a sweeter soil,so it may require some lime or dolomite.
Root crops don't like any manures at all. It makes the roots fork.
Brassicas like lots of everything. Including regular liquid feeds too.
So what's it gonna be?

Thanks, Longy

Sounds like I have to fertilise differently across the bed. I wonder how far the fertilisers 'move'?

Yes, I'm concerned about canola meal being GMed. I should do more research, but I believe that there's still a GM ban across the board in Tassie - although they allowed one of the big agribusiness companies to "trial" GM canola here a while back. Surprise, surprise; it got away! Those damn bees ignored the moratorium!! :P

If I find a similar oil-seed meal around here I'll jump on it! I've heard that cotton seed meal is an alternative. Other oil seeds include: Rapeseed, Sunflowers, Safflower, Mustard, Linseed, Soybean and Hemp. Worth looking out for these, maybe?
Cheers,
Stuart.

Ta Sarah. Probably a little far from Mornington in Vic, but handy information. I must try some of the produce shops around here. There are two within a km or two but never thought of going into them
