Best perennials/bulbs for interplanting with roses.

I'd like to hear what flowers people have found good success with in rose beds. Obviously Clematis and catmint, but what else? Any recommendations based on successful experience, or alternatively any suggestions for not so good combinations to avoid? I'm currently experimenting, I'm trying Delphinium Blue Sensation (roos or rabbits ate them), climbing Monkshood (Aconitum hemsleyanum), Amsonia hubrichtii, Dutch Iris, Campanula latifolia, Campanula glomerata, Gladioli, Foxglove (the hot sun seems to wilt it), dwarf bearded iris as edging only, Geranium X Magnificum and Russell Lupins.
