Summer triming of roses?

Postby G-Gardener » Fri Sep 06, 2013 9:54 am

Last year I started looking after the garden in my block of units. I'm comfortable with most plants but have no experience with roses.

I pruned them over winter but my issue is what to do with the long canes and branches that grow over summer. They just grow, and grow, and grow, and at two and three metres long I had to start cutting the canes and branches back because they were blocking the path.

In the botanical gardens rose bushes seem to remain fairly compact and "ordered". How is this achieved? Do I need to do measured pruning throughout the summer? Won't this limit the flowering potential?

Many thanks!
