Very woody rose to create a thick hedge/screen

Postby beginnergardener » Thu Feb 27, 2014 1:11 pm

Is there a fast growing, woody, free standing rose that can be grown as a hedge and would create a high and thick screen?

There are plenty of vigorous wild roses that will grow quickly to form a screen but they also grow pretty wide. A few wild roses like R. rugosa and R. primula will grow upright into dense bushes about 2m tall. Nevada grows into a dome shaped bush, there are some heritage roses like that. I have a hedge of Edna Walling, it grows tall (4m) and dense quickly but needs plenty of space. Here is a picture-

Most hybrid tea or floribunda roses don't make good hedges, they don't grow dense enough.
