SICK CAMELLIA JAPONICA - PLS HELP

Postby niki » Sun Jul 07, 2013 7:05 pm

Hi,

I'm an amateur gardener so would love any advice for my sick camellia: I planted a mature Camellia Japonica, Debbie, last November. The plant was doing well, ie; new growth noted. It has plenty of buds and should bloom soon. Over the last few months I have noted the following:
General yellowing of leaves
Dark/brown burned spots &
curling of leaves

I believe the yellowing of the leaves can be explained by my current alkaline soil. Although I ensured the soil was acidic when I planted, the acidity has obviously dropped over time. I have rectified this by adding agricultural sulphur and currently in search of pine needles to use as mulch. Is there anything else that could be causing the yellowing of the leaves? Iron deficiency? There isn't any drainage problem. Moisture levels are fine. It is also fertilized every three months with neutrog Kahoona, camellia specific food. Are there any other products that I can use to give it a boost? Cow manure has also been regularly added.

I'm very puzzled by the brown/burned sopts on the leaves. Any idea what is causing it.

Further curling of leaves noted and something is eating the leaves as well. What is a good insecticide for camellias?

Thanks in advance

Further to my post above, despite doing a number of things such as; correcting pH level of soil, checking for drainage issue and etc..the problem (yellowing of leaves) is worsening. Can anyone help?

You could get some Zinc Manganese foliage spray (from the big green B store). It says for citrus but since my lime, azaleas and some camellias had yellowing leaves, I gave them all a hit a day or so ago. The potted lime now has no yellow leaves.

I haven't had a lot to do with camelias niki, but there was a big old one at our previous place whose leaves did tend to go like that during the cooler months. Once it started to warm up again it usually recovered well.

There is a rule about not mentioning retail/mail order stores who sell plants.....this forum is on the largest mail order nursery site :D
