I think this big broad leaf tree is a weed, am I right?

Postby heli » Mon Jan 20, 2014 7:21 pm

This tree with 30 cm long broad leaf is right against three palm trees, so I don't think it is planned.

I'm thinking of cutting it down. Does anyone know if it is indeed weed?

It is an umbrella tree. Schefflera actinophylla. They do have the potential to be weeds as birds drop seed.

Thank you, Tam. I looked up Schefflera actinophylla in Wikipedia and it says: "It is an aggressive plant and its roots can dominate surrounding soil. In some areas (e.g., Florida and Hawaii, USA) it is an invasive weed and therefore planting is highly unadvised."

So that settles it. It will go.

It's actually a native, to areas as far south as Rockhampton. Looking at the location of yours, I'd say it's probably a gift from the birds, and would probably be a pain to get out once it got bigger anyway.

Furthermore, it actively looks for water and can break through your water pipes, depending on the material its made from, especially PVC pipes...
