What sort of palm is this?

Postby jaden62 » Sat Nov 22, 2014 8:15 pm

This is growing in my yard in SA. It is huge & has a flower like a Bird-of-Paradise that is black (& large) . I'd like to know what it is because I need to move it out of the garden it's currently in, & I want to know if it's something that is unusual here or something I can easily replace if I manage to murder it.

The plant is a bird of paradise...strelitzia Nicolai, from my experience it was a mammoth task to remove it from my garden, it grew far to big and untidy, very possessive of it's area.
I see it here in public parks and theme parks, needs little care and plenty of space.

Yep ! Get it out while you can ! I planted one at our old house , thinking it was the smaller variety . It will continue to clump and get taller at a fast rate . The bats loved the flowers , I didn't love the bat poo !
