Ornament Pear - Pyrus Calleryana - are they a pest?

Postby jarnie » Mon Dec 31, 2018 8:52 am

I want to replace a Golden Rhobinia (due to its annoying habit of suckering) and found what I thought would be a good (deciduous) replacement.

An Ornamental Pear - Pyrus Calleryana.

I Googled the name and found a lot of web sites but they were all in the USA. Some mentioned that they can be troublesome with new plants growing from dropped seeds and others suggested that the fruit is usually infertile and cause no problems UNLESS there is a similar tree nearby to cause cross pollination.

I appreciate your feedback on this. Can they troublesome?

Also if I cut the Rhobinia off at ground level and poison it how close can I plant the new tree to the existing stump?

Thanks
John
