Tree to plant near sewer line

Postby Trader » Sat Mar 09, 2013 7:29 pm

I was wanting to plant a large tree in my backyard. Unfortunately the spot that I was looking at has our sewer line running underneath. I was wondering whether there were any trees that do not seek out sewers/clog pipes or whether all tree roots will do this?

I think I'd be checking with your council, because I'd be surprised if you're actually even allowed to plant trees directly over a sewer.

I don't think that it is directly underneath but near enough that the roots are likely to spread near it.

Trees don't search out sewers unless there is a leak. If your suburb was built in the last 50years you should be ok. There are only a few trees that cause trouble, most trees small enough for a backyard should be fine.

Unfortunately the house is about 100 yrs old and so has old pipes :( I was wanting to plant a large tree (10m+) and so thought that most of them would cause some issues (??)

I suspect you may need to change your expectations, trader. Nevertheless, you might want to have a chat with your local council's tree person about what you're looking for.
