re: poisoning grass to make a bed for hedges...will this kill the plants if they are planted just a few days later?

I probably should (?) put a bed in to my front lawn (just turf) in order to get rid of the grass from stranglin the plants i am about to plant, and to loosen the soil. Should I put roundup down and wait a few days for grass to die, than run a rotary hoe? or would the roundup kill the plants too?

If you use roundup on lawn it usually needs a couple of sprays to kill it all.
Digging the grass out will be the only way to go if you want to plant that quickly.

That was what I was thinking Tam, but if the grass is couch it's going to be a bit more difficult to deal with.

I don't think I have ever successfully killed couch with Roundup. It makes it sick for a while then it is full steam ahead.

I will be using a turf cutter to remove a 50cm wide strip of grass the length of the 40metre long boundary where I want to put the plants, and then I will use a dingo with a trencher attachment to dig about 400mm deep, and pull some of the dirt out, and leave some in.
I will be buying 1cubic metre of enriched compost to mix in the bottom of the hole, go along and plant the plants every 1metre, and fill in around them.

Should I also use slow release fertaliser?

does the above procedure seem to make sense?

Couldn't agree more.. It is very difficult to control as even the tiniest piece of stem left in a garden bed will quickly develop into a new plant.

Which lawn turf you are going to use? If it is Green Lawn Turf them definitely you lay down around tree and keep some adjustable distance between the tree and turf. In this way you are able to kill unwanted grass and grow tree well. To know more about lawn care you may read this:- http://goo.gl/1TLMBT
