Whenever I'm in the op shops I always keep an eye out for steak knives.

I find them the perfect size for dividing plants where a regular pruning saw is often too big and awkward, and the pointy end is handy for getting things started.

An added bonus is that you're not bluntening an expensive tool by cutting into dirt.
