Starting out in the vegie garden

Don't buy soil!

Start your beds off with (preferably home made) compost, manure and whatever mulch you can get your hands on. Create it in layers, adding blood and bone as you go. Don't rush this...let it settle and top up as necessary. The layers will break down together, creating a wonderful environment for worms and your vegetables.

As your vegie garden progresses, keep adding the manure and mulch to keep these processes going.

By starting out this way and continuing to feed the soil, you shouldn't need to use much in the way of fertiliser.

Feed the soil, and it will feed the plant.

To illustrate what I mean, here are three photos of our garden. (Photos are clickable thumbnails.)

This was on planting day - 19th July 2009:

About three weeks later - 9th August:

And yesterday - about six or seven weeks after planting:

We're eating spinach, silverbeet, podding peas, snow peas and have even harvested four potatoes.
