short stemmed rhubarb

can anyone tell me why my rhubarb growing in the garden has very short stems but the leaves look quite normal size? :cry:

Is this the first season with the rhubarb? There are a few different types with different growing habits. From my little experience with rhubarb, it could also be the first spring flush that makes huge leaves.

Where do you live, Julie? My rhubarb is still quite small at this time of year but producing well, they respond well to manure or good fertiliser (however,don't cover the crown), regular watering with good drainage and a cool climate.
