Full shade fruit/produce plants

Postby dave111 » Wed Jan 04, 2012 9:24 pm

Does anyone know of any fruit/produce plants that do well in full shade (aside from herbs like mint)?

I looked into this just recently as I have a shady spot just begging for something to be planted in it, but I didn't find much that suited.

Basically, leafy and stalky things like salad greens, brassicas and rhubarb seem to be the best bet. You might have some luck with woodland fruits like raspberries and blackberries, but even they still need some sunshine to produce good sweet fruit.

Here are a couple of links worth reading:

and mint needs sun too. What about bamboo?

I have a dry shade spot that I have just given up finding an edible for... the kids turned it into a fairy garden instead so it's still useful :)

Let us know if you find something
