Starting a container garden this month

Postby growbabygrow » Sat Nov 24, 2012 8:57 pm

Hi guys,

Im hoping you can help me - I'm planning on starting a new container garden but before I do, I just wanted to check I was going about the right way of doing things. Id really appreciate it you could advise, i dont have any experience in gardening or growing vegetables but I have to start somewhere so starting here :) im looking at growing the following:

Cherry tomatoes
Herbs (basil, coriander, oregano, rosemary, lemon grass, chives)
Salad leaves/chard
Chilli

I am in Perth, temperate climate and a 3rd of my balcony can get full sun for around 5-6 hours every day. I was planning on getting a self watering planter for the cherry tomato plant, and then just planting 3 herbs together (with the lemon grass in its separate pot) and salad leaves in one pot as well. I am planning on getting the planters and soil/potting mix from Bunnings next week.

Any help/advice would be most appreciated

Look at my garden pots :)
I've been container gardening for 3 seasons now and tried various things.
Some handy hints
Get bigger pots than you think you need
Get wicking pots
Get quality potting mix (a must)
Incorporate organic matter.

You can browse my garden here:

& the previous year

The vege garden is like having a second family.
