Raspberry canes

Growing raspberries take 2...
I killed my last lot by planting them next to a Galv fence, and I've just bought a heap of canes in pots. There's probably 12-15 nice ones. If anyone grows them, do you have some advice? My Grandma used to have them in shitty clay/loam (it would have been acidic - in Crafers West, SA - high rainfall, cold Winters, cooler Summers) under gum trees so they got dappled shade in Summer. She had a drain/gutter type ditch running around them, and she'd turn on a tap, fill the drain with water once a week or so. That's all, and they thrived. I assume I wait for them to die down and cut them back? If I cut them back now would the cuttings root, like blackberries would? Or should I lay the canes along the ground and peg them down to set roots?

I'd like to grow a range of berries one day. What sort of maintenance do they need?
