Hello,
This winter we planted a number of fruit trees (stone fruit and citrus). We don't have heaps of space so are planning to espalier them (not necessarily in traditional espalier shape). They were given a formative prune when planted.
The stone fruits have now begun to come in to leaf. I'm wondering if I should prune off the new growth that is growing in unwanted directions now, so that the tree can put more energy in to growing into the desired shape? Or is it worth leaving these unwanted branches for now so that the tree can use them to photosynthesise and get more energy for all around growth, and then prune them off next winter?
Any advice appreciated!
Thanks
