water lily

I just bought a water lily, now I was told that it has to be 250mm below water level, its in a standard 8inch black plastic pot. Shock surprise! The pond is not deep enough! can I put the lily in a shallower pot? ie, an Icecream container?

most water plants have to be below the water level.ABC did a stoy on water lillies not so long ago, maybe a google will help

Or get some fine netting (e.g. panty hose with a few small holes in it), and put the root ball in that - this means you can flatten out the root ball and hopefully get the water lily a bit further under water. You can also root them directly into the sludge at the bottom of the pond if you have any. They do need to be a reasonable distance under.
