New Guinea Tongue Orchid.

Postby abwal » Fri Aug 16, 2013 10:44 am

On a recent visit to Mackay we were fortunate to see a Bulbophyllum fletcherianum ( 'New Guinea Tongue Orchid') about to flower.Image
The pseudo bulbs of this orchid are about the size of a tennis ball and the single leaf from each pseudo bulb can be up to 90cm in length.

It was in bud when we saw it. Image The flowers do not fully open and it is pollinated by blowflies. The scent has been described as being similar to that of rotting meat.

It does look quite ornamental in that second photo, sounds like an, um, interesting plant.

Yes! Different, but I do not think I need one. :-@

Anyone going to or through Mackay should definitely take the time to visit the orchid house at Queens Park. It is really spectacular and the curator is very friendly and extremely knowledgeable.
