Canberra Gardeners - Important info re asbestos

Postby Sam » Wed Mar 04, 2015 5:34 pm

I'm not sure which suburbs are affected by this but it is about houses affected by "Mr Fluffy" loose fill asbestos in 58 suburbs - 1,021 properties in total.

The ABC Canberra Saturday Gardening programme invited listeners to call with questions regarding gardens impacted by the buyback etc.

I've put the start of the story and then will add the link.

Homes affected by 'Mr Fluffy' loose fill asbestos are spread across 58 Canberra suburbs and include 1,021 properties.

Over half of the affected homeowners have agreed to sell their properties under a multi-million dollar buyback demolition scheme.

While some homeowners have called for alternatives to the buyback scheme, the ACT Government said the scheme will not fundamentally change.

What happens to gardens on blocks marked for demolition?

In a special edition of 666 ABC Canberra Saturday Gardening, listeners were invited to call with questions concerning Canberra gardens impacted by the scheme.

Head of the ACT Asbestos Response Taskforce Andrew Kefford joined landscape gardeners Graham Williams, Mick Burgess and Dennis Dempsey to respond to questions from residents.

Residents expressed determination to save well-established plants and trees.

"One of the hardest things about leaving these properties is the gardens in the end. They're so much a part of what we love about our home," one resident told 666 ABC Canberra.

Hope this helps anyone affected by this.

Thanks for posting this Sam. Very sad situation for many people.
Oh, I should take this opportunity to say that people in other areas who are unsure of what sort of insulation they have might want to get it checked, loose fill asbestos has also been found in Queanbeyan, Yass, etc.
