For the love of Lavender.

Postby dalelesley » Fri Jan 08, 2016 1:44 pm

We recently went to Bridestowe Lavender farm here in Tasmania. We have been there before but each time missed the flowering season but this year we caught it in full bloom. The smell was something again and if any of you ever visit Tassie in the months on Dec, Jan then you should put it on your must see list. Entry is $10 ahead but well worth the money. Just a little story about this amazing place. It covers 250 acres all under Lavender. It is the biggest privately owned Lavender farm in the WORLD and when you stand on the hill and look over the vast mauve land you can understand why. The hoppers they put the cut lavender heads in holds 250klgs after the processing it produces around 1 lt of pure Lavender oil. The farm was originally born in Lilydale in 1921 but outgrew the acreage there and they then bought an old Diary in Nabowla which is where they are today in memory of the diary they named the coffee lounge after the diary which is Woodcrost café. The Lavender is French Lavender. So with out further to do here are a couple of pics of this lovely place.

Wow. Those lavenders are quite beautiful. How did you manage to grow these?

Absolutely gorgeous Dalesley. Thanks for posting.

Vanleeuwen, to grow lavender, plant it and it will grow. lol. Generally speaking they're fairly tough, though some varieties don't much like high humidity. The biggest thing with keeping them looking good to to be sure to keep them pruned occasionally to prevent them from becoming leggy.

vanleeuwen, I wish no I did not grow these but I do have French Lavender in my garden and as pam said they are quite easy to grow and almost indestructible. The will grow happily in a pot as well.
