ID plants & weeds in rental veggie garden

Postby Luci » Wed Aug 27, 2014 3:04 pm

Hi everyone, I've just moved into a house in Bulli/Wollongong with a weed infested vegetable garden - it's pretty much my first time gardening as previously lived in Sydney Inner West where there was no back "yard" (only a deck where I had a few things in pots).

I've done my best to ID the plants as best I can, and want to make sure I don't accidentally rip out vegetables, herbs, or beneficial support plants.

1. Is this flowering parsley, or coriander, or a weed? There are bunches of small white flowers, and pink flowers. The upper leaves are quite thin spiky, while leaves on the bottom fronds are more rounded out. It's approx 40-60 cm high, lots of growth.

I think this is Parsley or Coriander

2. Is this spring onion, shallot, leek, or ? About 30-40 cm high, maybe 2-5cm diameter (sorry I didn't measure)

3. I think these are weeds - would appreciate confirmation.

Sorry, there is a limit of 3 attachments, so I will have to continue in the next message

4. Suspect Weed B. Lovely simple white flower, rounded leaves in trios.
I dug up one of these and it had white kind of tear shaped nodules along it's roots underground.

Mostly they are garden plants rather than weeds though it depends on your point of view. 1 looks like something in the carrot family, 2 could be an onion or a shallot, 3 and 4 are oxalis, that looks like the non-weed form, 5 is nasturtium, 6 looks like some sort of ornamental herb, looks familiar but I'm not sure.

Spot on. The last one is familiar to me as well, but nothing that you couldn't just dig in or pull out.

As others have suggested:

The first one looks a bit like coriander in flowers. It's great to eat, seeds freely (which means free plants!) and the flowers are a magnet for beneficial insects.

The second is an allium of some kind - garlic or onion.

The third is definately an oxalis, but it's not soursob, so I wouldn't be worried about it.

Thanks for your help everyone! And apologies for delay in responding - having moved house was without internet for some time and just grabbing what I could at the library on and off.
