Size of hybrid Eucalypts?

Postby Tannie » Tue Nov 18, 2014 2:18 am

Hi, Can anyone give me an idea of how large the new breeds of hybrid flowering Eucalypts will grow? As in the ones marketed as Summer Red, Summer Beauty and so on. There seems to be quite a variation in what the suppliers say about heights. Some say 4-5 metres, others say to 6-8 metres.
We are in arid zone Queensland with hot summers and frost in winter on Clay / Black soil.

Hi Tannie...
The variation in height depends on the type:
All of the grafted flowering gums are formed by grafting different Corymbias together to form the hybrid (which is what you buy).
Eg these four hybrids: (there are probably more - but these are the ones you mentioned)
Summer Red 4-5 m, Scarlet Red colour
Summer Beauty 5-7 m, Pale Pink colour
Summer Glory 5-7 m, Purple Pink colour
Summer Snow 5-7 m, Cream colour
It will take 8 - 10 years to reach the lower ends of these heights.
They all prune quite well - so you can keep them to any size you want. Just prune for height.
Don't worry about flowering after pruning because all Corymbias flower at the growing tips when they sprout the following season.
